Hard Disks      This is commonly called a disk drive and a hard drive.  Its method of storing data provides a practically quick access to huge amount of data.  The said data is stored on “platters” or, technically, called electromagnetically charged surfaces.

Optical Disks  This is a type of storage medium that needs a low-powered laser beam in order to be read or written to.

Tape Storage  This storage device is used externally.  It can store data in electromagnetic charges through a loop of flexible materials that are celluloid-like.  It’s basically a tape cartridge in a protective casing that is also portable.

Floppy Disks   This storage device is a type of magnetic disk memory.  Most floppy disks nowadays have a capacity of 1.44 MB.  They are quite popular for transferring software from one computer to another, plus it is ready portable.  However, compared to hard disks, floppy disks are slow and have lower storage capacity.

CD-R                It means compact disc-recordable.  It has become a universal data storage device worldwide.  It is widely used for music recording as well as for file storage.  This type of disc is a write-once media, which means the data you store there cannot be erased nor re-recorded.

DVD                 Short for Digital Video Disc, DVDs are optical discs with high density and have a high storage capacity for not only data but sounds and pictures as well.  It approximately has a capacity seven times larger than a CD-R.
